CSET

The subject matter examination, needed only when no transcript route covers the requirement.

Ways to avoid taking it

Any of the four non-exam routes on the Subject Matter Competence page (qualifying major, approved subject matter program, coursework evaluation, or the mixed route) makes the CSET partly or fully unnecessary.

CSET: Multiple Subjects

Three subtests, each scored separately, each requiring a scaled score of 220 to pass. Subtests may be taken independently and retaken independently.

SubtestContent domainsFormat
I (101)Reading, Language and Literature; History and Social Science (world, U.S., California)52 MC + 4 constructed-response; 3 hrs
II (214)Science (physical, life, earth and space; investigation and tools); Mathematics (number sense, algebra and functions, measurement and geometry, statistics/data/probability)52 MC + 4 constructed-response; 3 hrs
III (225)Physical Education; Human Development (birth through adolescence); Visual and Performing Arts (dance, music, theater, visual art)MC + constructed-response; 2 hrs 15 min

Older material codes Subtest III as 103. Current CTC and Pearson materials use 225. Confirm codes at registration.

CSET: Mathematics (Single Subject)

Three subtests for the full math credential; passing score 220 each. A Foundational-Level credential uses Subtests I and II only.

Other Single Subject areas vary in configuration and subtest count; check the CSET site for the specific subject.
